improving my dance skills?

ive been studying movement, ballet and hip- hop for the past few years. Sometimes my technique is great and sometimes i feel so heavy and forced. But when i learned how to swing a golf club, my teacher told us to use half our strength, not to try and “kill it” . Or the ball would never get any lift or distance. it works for me and i have a pretty consistant and graceful swing.

Is It wise to think like this in dance–not to try and “KILL IT”?
